About Glenda

My name is Glenda Montgomery and I am a parent educator in Portland Oregon. I have taught elementary school in both Canada and the United States, using Positive Discipline techniques in the classroom since 1986. I began teaching “Parenting the Positive Discipline Way” in 1999 when my youngest was in preschool and have been leading parenting classes and workshops in Portland since that time. Since 2006, I have offered One-On-One Parent Coaching. As of 2008, I have become a Positive Discipline Associate, trained and certified by the national Positive Discipline Association to train both classroom teachers and parent educators.

Positive Discipline is an approach to parenting created by Jane Nelsen and made famous in the Positive Discipline series of books written by Jane Nelsen, Cheryl Irwin, Lynn Lott, Mary Hughes and others. It is a proactive approach to parenting that is neither permissive nor punitive.  It is based on strategies of kindness and firmness that effectively develop responsibility, self reliance, cooperation and problem solving skills.  Children have two important needs: to feel a sense of significance (that they matter) and a sense of connection. When children have opportunities to meet these needs, they are much more likely to have a sense of well being and are much less likely to misbehave. Discipline and life skills must be consciously taught; P.D. provides parents with ideas and strategies to do this crucial work in a way that gives them a sense of competence and confidence.
